Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Many men suffer from a condition called gynecomastia, or enlargement in the breast region. This is generally caused by a hormone deficiency. Affected men often have excessive fat or tissue in the breast area, and can experience discomfort or embarrassment as a result. Male breast reduction can give your chest a flatter profile and more traditional appearance.

Our surgeons work with you so that you can have a chest that better suits your self-image.

The Procedure

Male breast reduction is done mainly through liposuction. A small incision is made around the areola, and our surgeon removes the excess fat and tissue from that area with a suction device. Male breast reduction can be done in conjunction with a full liposuction, and both surgeries can be done at the same time. The procedure is done under general anesthesia, and typically takes one to two hours to complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is recovery like? Male breast reduction is an outpatient procedure, and you can go home on the same day as the surgery. Typically, swelling lasts for around one to two weeks, and you are required to wear a compression garment for that time. Within four weeks, you can resume vigorous activity and your exercise routine.

Will there be scarring? Immediately after the surgery, some scarring may be visible, especially if there is still swelling in the area. However, the scarring should almost completely subside within a few weeks. Because the incision is made near the areola, it should be fairly inconspicuous.

Will I be able to perform chest exercises You should hold off from all physical activity in the four weeks following the surgery, but once recovery is complete, there are no physical restrictions. Considering the surgery removes fat and tissue surrounding the chest area, any muscle gained after the surgery is quite visible.
