As you get older, you may notice that the skin on your face seems thinner and more prone to sagging and wrinkling. This is very likely due to natural loss of fat in key areas under the skin. Without the support of fat, your cheeks, temples and under-eye area may become more sunken, giving you an older, hollowed-out appearance. If you have noticed some of these effects, you may want to consult with our surgeons about a fat transfer procedure. Also known as fat grafting, the procedure takes fat from other parts of your body and injects it into your face, giving you a fuller, healthier profile.
Let our surgeons bring a sense of youthfulness and vitality back to your face.
Our surgeon first does an initial analysis to determine the best area to remove the fat from, although it is most often taken from the abdomen, hips or thighs. You receive a tiny incision on the determined area and the fat is suctioned out, then re-inserted into the face. The process typically takes about two hours to complete, under local or general anesthesia.
Fat grafting is also often done in conjunction with a facelift for a full facial makeover, and both procedures can be done during the same sitting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is recovery like? Fat transfer is an outpatient procedure, and you leave on the same day you receive the surgery. You may experience discomfort and swelling in the areas where fat was extracted from, and we advise that you treat those areas with ice packs. You are free to return to daily activities within two weeks, but you should wait until you receive approval from your surgeon before resuming a vigorous exercise regimen.
Who is the ideal patient? Typically, patients are within the ages of 30 and 70, who show early signs of aging and are in otherwise good health. You should consult with us to determine the best facial procedure before undergoing any surgery.
Is it safe? Since the process takes active fat cells from your body and reinserts them, there are no foreign substances involved in the procedure, and the risks are minimal. Many cosmetic surgeons have found that some of the fat that is transferred to the face is reabsorbed, but enough remains in place after one year to still provide the additional volume patients are seeking.
